Native seedlings planted

Mangaroa Farms sits beside the Mangaroa River in Whitemans Valley, Upper Hutt, within the Te Awa Kairangi Hutt Valley catchment. Once a dairy farm and pine plantation, the roughly 2,000-acre property is now a living laboratory for the shift to regenerative agriculture and native forest. It was established through a gift from the Monahan family in 2018 and runs as a not-for-profit within Biome Trust.

‍

The farm backs onto more than 500 acres of old-growth native forest, and over 700 acres of pine are being regenerated as native forest. Alongside a market garden and community food hub, the team runs large-scale native and riparian planting along the river.

‍

CarbonInvoice's planting is on former dairy pasture, following the lie of the land: sedges and harakeke down in the wetland, and tōtara, karamū and rewerewa up on the drier banks. Over time these trees will clean up the waterways, bring the birdlife back, and pull carbon out of the air for decades.

‍

Mangaroa Farms hosted its first CarbonInvoice Planting Action Day in 2026, when Lowe & Co planted 2,213 native seedlings in a single day – the most trees ever planted at a CarbonInvoice Planting Action Day.
